Tracking down Notorious Marks in Final Fantasy XVI provides valuable rewards and essential upgrades for Clive's journey through Valisthea. Among these formidable targets is the Bomb King, a Rank B mark tied directly to an important inventory upgrade quest. Defeating this fiery boss allows players to expand their consumable carrying capacity, making future encounters much easier to handle.

Unlocking the Bomb King Hunt

To spawn the Bomb King on the Hunt Board, players must first progress through the main story until reaching the Out of the Shadow quest line. After finishing Letting Off Steam III, visit Owain the engineer in Mid's workshop located within the Hideaway. Speaking with Owain initiates the Weird Science side quest, which officially adds the Bomb King notice to the Hunt Board.

Before heading out, make sure to check in with Nektar the Moogle to verify the details on the board. Though the board gives a general description, it points players toward ancient Fallen ruins hidden within the Empire of Sanbreque. Preparing proper fire-resistant gear and abilities before setting out will streamline the fight significantly.

Finding the Bomb King Location

The fastest way to reach the target is by fast traveling to The Dragon's Aery Obelisk in the Sanbreque region. From the waypoint, travel south along the main path leading toward the forested section known as The Imperial Chase. Keep an eye on the left side of the road for a narrow opening framed by crumbling stone walls.

Pass through this gateway and follow the winding path north until reaching a secluded arena called The Crock. The Bomb King will spawn at the far end of these abandoned ruins as soon as you enter the area. Because there are no direct quest markers pointing to the arena, following these landmarks ensures you arrive without getting lost.

Combat Strategies and Tactics

Unlike many other Notorious Marks in the game, the Bomb King does not possess a stagger meter. This means traditional stagger-focused abilities like Garuda's Aerial Blast are less effective, making direct damage abilities the better choice. During the initial phase, dodge its straightforward fireball projectiles and punish its openings with high-damage strikes.

As the fight progresses, the boss uses an ability called Coronation, which surrounds it with flames and launches heavier fireballs. The most dangerous attack is Witan, where the Bomb King summons several smaller bombs that begin a self-destruction countdown. Back away from the minion explosions or clear them quickly with wide area-of-effect spells to stay safe.

Rewards and Inventory Upgrades

Upon defeating the Bomb King, Clive receives 1,000 Experience Points, 65 Ability Points, 9,000 Gil, and 20 Renown. The boss also drops a rare crafting material known as a Bomb Ember alongside the critical quest item, Bomb Ash.

Return to the Hideaway and hand the Bomb Ash over to Owain to complete the Weird Science quest. As a reward, Owain crafts the Treated Potion Satchel, permanently increasing the number of potions and high potions Clive can carry into battle. This crucial upgrade makes taking down the Bomb King well worth the effort.
